The Blue Island Public Library, along with the Blue Island Historical Society, presents three big Burnham events in November to celebrate the centennial of the 1909 Plan of Chicago.

November 5 we “Meet Dan Burnham” as we’re introduced to the people and events that shaped the Windy City and transformed it from the “Wild Onion” into the “City of Big Shoulders.”
This event is at the Blue Island Historical Society, 13018 Maple Ave. – 10:30am for school groups and 7pm for all!

November 10 the Library welcomes WGN radio host and Chicago Tribune writer Rick Kogan along with Tribune photographer Charlie Osgood to explore Burnham’s legacy in “Make Big Plans.”  This event is at the Blue Island Library – 7pm.

November 24 is a special “Seniors Only” lunch and slide presentation of Burnham’s vision featuring Prof. Jeff Mishur of Art Excursions.  This event is at the Blue Island Library – 11:30am.

Each of these events are FREE but do require a ticket.  Tickets are available at the Blue Island Library’s Main Desk. School groups must make reservations, please call Dan Carroll at the BIPL: 708-388-1078 x30. Tickets for the senior lunch are also available at the Blue Island Senior’s Office in City Hall.

Support MetroSouth ~ sign the e-petition

Metro South Medical CenterMetroSouth is requesting a tax reclassification that will financially help the hospital as it strives to enhance care and expand access and services in our community. Please join us in urging our county officials to help MetroSouth so they can continue to provide health care and much-needed jobs in the Southland.

It is important to know that while MetroSouth is asking for a reduction in its property tax bill, it will still be one of the biggest property tax payers in Blue Island and the surrounding area. And for over 100 years, the hospital didn’t pay any property taxes at all, so this reasonable request will benefit everyone in our community. We will help keep our hospital financially healthy and we will still see a needed boost in property tax revenues.

PLEASE GO TO http://www.supportsouthlandhealthcare.org/ and click on “sign the petition.” Then click to send an e-mail to our county officials. Please forward this information to as many people in the South Suburbs as you can and ask them to help us with this effort.
