Title: Building Inspector
Position: Permanent, Full-time, 40 hours
Reports to: Building Official
Status: Hourly, Non-exempt
Compensation: DOQE

General Summary
The City of Blue Island is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a full-time building inspector. This position includes performing inspections on residential, multi-family, commercial and industrial properties to ensure City ordinance compliance. Confers with property owners, contractors, builders and the general public; explains and interprets requirements and restrictions of adopted codes and ordinances.

Nature of Work
The position requires analytical thinking and problem-solving, team-oriented participation, excellent human relations, interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills, good public presentation and customer service skills. Knowledge and experience with Word and Excel, is preferred. This position will be supervised by the Building Official.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
• Conducts on-site inspections for new construction, repair and renovations to existing construction of building and structures for compliance with building codes and regulations;
• Conducts on-site inspections for property maintenance and ordinance violations, such as overgrown grass, garbage and other property maintenance issues.
• Enforcement of Zoning Codes; Specifically signage, lighting and vehicles.
• Issues citations and appears in housing court for violations as needed.
• Interprets and explains municipal codes and ordinances to the general public, contractors, business owners and other interested individuals in the field, over the counter or on the telephone.
• Maintains documentation and files of inspections, enforcement actions and violations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of laws, ordinances and codes as they relate to property maintenance;
• Working knowledge of building plans, blueprints, and zoning codes;
• Working knowledge of building trades and principles;
• Verbal and written communication skills in order to effectively communicate with supervisors, building owners, contractors and the general public;
• Ability to physically inspect construction sites including walking properties, climbing ladders and kneeling.
• Ability to enforce codes and ordinances tactfully and consistently.
Minimum Qualifications
• High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent;
• A valid driver’s license; and
• Two (2) years of property maintenance and construction/inspection experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this position.

Preferred Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in architecture, construction, or related field;
• Municipal building inspection experience is highly desirable;
• International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Residential Building Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector and/or Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector; and
• Possess an ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification or be able to obtain within 6 months.
