Landmark and Historic District Nominations

Blue Island has recognized 74 landmark homes and commercial properties, including the Olde Western Historic District.

The Historic Preservation Commission makes recommendations on new landmarks to Blue Island’s City Council, which officially designates each property. Landmark properties are noted in town by a historic marker. Each landmark represents a significant historic connection to Blue Island or has exceptional architectural merit.

Historic Districts are created when a majority of property owners within the boundaries of the district agree to be protected by historic status. To learn more about creating a historic district, contact the Community Development Department.
