Come Out For The 1st Day of Spring!

A Gardener & Volunteer General Interest Meeting & Seed Starting Workshop for all those interested in Blue Island community gardening will be held on

Come see what Blue Island has to grow! You will have the opportunity to

  • • register for a plot
  • • sign up to volunteer
  • • learn about future workshops
  • • start seeds for our Food Bank garden plots
  • • schmooze with local gardeners and green volunteers

Representatives from both of Blue Island’s community gardens will be present.

That same evening we’ll also be starting seeds for our Food Bank plots and Heirloom Seedling Sale Gardener Scholarship Fundraiser (5/9). Volunteers will be starting seeds for the Community and Food Bank Plots. Registered gardeners will be able to starting seeds for their own plots too. Extra hands will help us achieve our goals!

Celebrate the new year and Blue Island’s 178-year history during an action-packed all-day open house! Choose one, some or all of the day’s sessions. The evening session will be a home movie-sharing experience with our friends at the Blue Island Arts Alliance and Chicago Film Archives!

  • ALL DAY — Photo Scavenger Hunt on Western Ave (participate to be entered into a raffle!); Albee House artifacts tour with Mike Wolski; and Albee House Tea Party.
  • 1:00pm — Blue Island Library tour with Mike Kaliski (2433 York)
  • 3:00pm — “Brew Island: Breweries & Taverns in Pre-Prohibition Blue Island” with Jason Berry
  • 3:30pm — Scavenger Hunt awards
  • 6:00pm-8:00pm — Blue Island & Neighbors Movie Night (Bring your 8mm, 16mm, and super 8 films–we’ll be showing one from our archives too! Archivists will be available to inspect film. Projectors provided.)

OPERATION: Thank a Vet!

Join us for the 4th Annual Blue Island Veterans Parade on Saturday, November 10th. The parade sets off at 11am from Hart Park at 123rd Street and travels south down Western Avenue to Union Street, heading west to Memorial Park for a celebration of our Veterans’ service with a military vehicle exhibit and classic car show!
