West Nile Virus Alert

The South Cook County Mosquito Abatement District announced that the risk from West Nile is high based on recent test results from mosquito pools in suburban Cook County. This is peak season for human transmission of the West Nile virus, and will remain so until cooler weather arrives later in the year.

While the South Cook County Mosquito Abatement District will continue efforts to reduce the threat of an outbreak, there are actions you can take to help protect yourself, your family, and your neighbors:

1. Remove any standing water on your property. This includes unused swimming pools, bird baths, buckets, and any other containers that are holding water. It only takes a few days for mosquitoes to use standing water for breeding.

2. Use mosquito repellent, and wear long pants and long sleeve shirts during the early morning, at dusk, or when working in heavy vegetation.
