Community Meeting on Backyard Sustainability

Join us for a community meeting on sustainability practices that can be implemented in your own backyard.

Where: Evangelical Community Church, 2237 W. 120th Street
When: October, 23, 2013 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The meeting, supported by our 7th Ward Aldermen and Neighborhood Watch #37, will be facilitated by students from University of Illinois-Chicago. Participants will have the opportunity to visit stations representing different topics and give input on sustainability practices that could be used in their own backyards and related policies that could be passed in Blue Island.

You will be the ‘expert’ and asked to give input & feedback based on your knowledge of your neighborhood; the presenters will use your ideas to draft policy that can be presented to City Council in order to make sustainability practices easier to carry out.  Your participation is needed!

Topics of discussion:

  • • Reducing flooding
  • • Growing food
  • • Recycling and disposing waste at household and neighborhood levels
  • • Alternative heating and cooling systems for your home, including geothermal water heaters
  • • Alternative electricity sources for your home, including residential windmills and solar panels
  • • Rain barrels, rain gardens, and cisterns

Share your voice in Blue Island’s future as a green community!
