“To Sleep with Angels” Book Discussion with Author, John Kuenster

“To Sleep with Angels” sensitively recounts the 1958 Our Lady of Angels School fire, which to this day evokes memories of anguish and loss. Author John Kuenster will talk about his book and answer questions. This free event is brought to you by the Blue Island Historical Society and the Blue Island Public Library.

Happy 175th Birthday, Blue Island!

On a perfect September day, Blue Island Mayor Don Peloquin opened our Welcome Weekend on Friday, September 17 by unveiling the City’s new logo, marking the start of a year of promoting our fabulous history, architecture, and recreational opportunities to family and friends, residents and visitors alike.

Blue Island’s 175th Birthday Party kicked off with a performance from the Eisenhower Marching Band and featured a happy birthday singalong, cake and ice cream, a Welcome Weekend “King and Queen” (the oldest residents in attendance), and mementos shared by the partygoers.

Blue Island has embarked on a Preserve America Cultural Heritage Marketing and Outreach effort, made possible with a grant from the National Park Service.

Turn in unused or expired medicine this Saturday, Sept. 25

National Prescription Take-Back Initiative
Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, 10am-2pm

On Sept. 25, 2010, DEA will coordinate a collaborative effort with state and local law enforcement agencies to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation’s medicine cabinets.

DEA will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at sites nationwide. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Historic & Charming City Invites Everyone to “Welcome Weekend” of Events, September 17 – 19, 2010

Blue Island Mayor Donald E. Peloquin has declared September 17, 18 & 19, “Welcome Weekend” to celebrate the historic city’s 175th Anniversary.

“Everyone in Blue Island is ready to welcome visitors on this special weekend,” Peloquin said. “In addition to the many stores, restaurants, historic homes, beautiful parks and friendly residents, visitors can enjoy special events that take place throughout the year.”

Mayor Peloquin expresses thanks to the many hands that are making this event possible, among them are the Blue Island Historic Preservation Commission, The Forum newspaper and the Blue Island Historical Society.
